Editing Video

This week we have been completing our editing assignment, which involved editing a montage of images together. For this assignment we were able to choose images from the background footage we filmed when filming a music video at the end of semester 1.

When I first heard we doing this assignment, I was a bit like “OMG, I can’t do editing!” Even though I had used the editing programme ‘Final Cut Pro’ during my BTEC I’m not really that confident with it and often tried to avoid it. However once I had begun the assignment, I began to relax because I started to remember bits and pieces about what I had learned about Final Cut Pro. It also helped that we were given some useful handouts that helped us use the programme.

One thing I did find quite difficult was choosing the right images, I personally liked the majority of the beach shots, but some of the shots were very shaky where the camera had moved about too quickly and this affected the shot. This meant that I had to cut the images really short, which then meant I had to find more images to make up the two to three minute piece.

Once I had my rough cut, I decided to important the images to see how the whole thing would look and sound together. To be honest I was shocked at how well the music went with the images because before I have always edited the picture to the music but this time I did it the opposite way round. Although most of it linked well together there were areas where I was able to slightly move things around.

However after watching it back a few times I decided to change the images around a bit. I decided to have images of the town, and traffic in the middle of the piece whereas before I had them dotted all about, I felt this looked a lot more structured and wasn’t so confusing to the viewers.

There were times during the edit, I did feel that it wasn’t going too well and I did begin to get really frustrated and fed up with it. But once I watched the final cut back I was pleased with the finished product.

SALINE

Well were now into semester two, and this time studying film and T.V.
Now that all our modules for this semester have been introduced we can all get started.

But a couple of weeks ago, we all had an exciting opportunity to go and be runners on a film set for
'Perceval Pictures' who were making a short film titled ‘Saline’ which was being filmed in Weston –Super-Mare. One of the film’s locations was on Weston beach this is the location where some of us helped out as runners.

The first day I went down the crew had experience quite a few problems one, which included the camera not working. This meant filming was put on hold while one crewmember headed off to get another camera. To be honest at this point I did become a little bored because there was sooooo much waiting around and very little to do. Plus it didn’t really help much that the weather was freezing cold. However this didn’t put me off and I went back for a second day to gain some more experience and help the crew out. I enjoyed the second day a lot more, mainly because there was plenty more to do. Some of the jobs I got to do the second day was go and collect bits and pieces from the hotel, take the camera battery to be charged, and just try and keep members of the public away from shot.

It was great opportunity to see how a film crew works, the crew were all friendly and were happy to allow us to help out, we all got to do a bit of networking but what was also good was we got to see that what we do learn in the classroom does really take place in a real-life production.
